Critics and the public say Karen Stone is too old for her role in a play she is about to take to Broadway. The play subsequently flops and her businessman husband gives her a way out: They are off to a holiday in Rome but he suffers a fatal heart attack on the plane. Mrs. Stone stays in Rome, leases a magnificent apartment with a view, and is introduced to a young Italian man named Paolo. Karen falls in love with Paolo but the consequences of the affair could not be further away from a happy ending.
