“Precious,” based off the novel “Push” by Sapphire, received commercial and critical success in 2009. The story of Precious captivated audiences worldwide, and shows a courageous and emotional depiction of inner-city life in America. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Audience and Grand Jury Prize for best drama. “Precious” went on to screen at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival, and ultimately receive six Academy Award nominations.
Claireece “Precious” Jones (Gabourey Sidibe) is a teenager living in Harlem in 1987. The film follows her journey as she struggles through abuse, her second pregnancy, and illiteracy. Under the guidance of a new teacher (Paula Patton), Precious is presented with the opportunity to enroll in an alternative school. With newfound hope, Precious works to overcome her traumatic past and change her life for the better.
